Fatherhood: AI (aye yai yai)

As I was planning our most recent Dad Strength call, I received a harried email. One of the dads in our group was experiencing some anxiety about AI. So we did what we always do: we talked it out.

Here’s one takeaway:
We cannot protect our kids with our own present-day knowledge. This isn’t like reading one chapter ahead in their textbook. The simple, brutal truth is that there’s no combination or pass-code that we can use to unlock the future for them. Instead, our best hope is to equip them with the internal skills to navigate things themselves. That begins with clear thinking.

This screen-cap is from a text I received earlier today on prioritizing action. The reason I’m sharing this is because there can be a lot of power in an emoji — or any symbol — when it becomes shorthand for an identity shift.

Q: Are you going to sign up for that event?

A: 🤠

Q: Have you started working on that project yet?

A: 🤠

Q: What will you do?

A: 🤠

What I'm reading + a request for action

The only thing I’ve read this week has been to my son. It’s Black Ships Before Troy, which is a kid’s version (give or take) of The Iliad. My son getting into Greek mythology and I’ve been delighted. Here’s the podcast (thanks, Peter) that kicked it off: Greeking Out

On that note, I’d like to start building a new resource.

🤠 If you have a favourite book, movie, game, etc. please email me some details — including the age your kid was when they experienced it. I’ll compile it into a dadabase and share it when it’s a little more developed.🤠 Thank you in advance!

Why did the man fall into a well?

He couldn’t see that well.
